This list will help you make your F-1 student visa application a success:

  • Find an ESL school authorized to enroll non-immigrant students and issue a Form I-20.
  • Complete the on-line application and pay the required fees. Make sure that the name used in your application is identical to the name as listed in your passport.
  • Submit your Financial Certification Form to the ESL school.
  • Turn-around time varies with different schools; A F International College has a turn-around time of 24 hours for processing I-20 applications in addition to mailing time.
  • Receive the I-20 or DS-2019 from the ESL school & carefully review the acceptance letter that comes with your document. A F International College will send you an E-coy of your I-20 so you can check the data.
  • Pay the SEVIS I-901 fee, print receipt. Please note: A F International College will pay this fee for you and include the receipt in the I-20 package.
  • Make an appointment with the US Consulate with the SEVIS ID on the I-20 or DS-2019* to apply for the F-1 or J-1 visa.
  • Have appointment with the US Consular officer*.
  • Pick up passport with F-1 or J-1 visa*.
  • Prepare for travels to the US 30 days before your program start date.
  • Arrive in the US and cross the US Borders.
  • Check in at the ESL school

*Canadian citizens do NOT need to apply for the F or J visa. However, they still have to follow the rest of the procedures and enter the U.S. with a valid I-20 or DS-2019.
