Eye on LA

Like most metropolitan centers in the world, Los Angeles is certainly not crime free and drugs can be a problem but exercise due caution, especially in downtown areas and you should be safe. Away from these areas, crime is rather low key. Common-sense precautions should ensure a safe trip. Do not walk unattended in the evening in dark, unpopulated areas.

At the local beaches, pay particular attention to the safety of your belongings. Most beaches in the area are staffed with life guards, but you should always take responsibility for your own safety in the ocean, and watch children closely. This is Sunny California, so remember to use sunscreen or a beach umbrella to avoid burns.

Traffic and safety: Local highways and interstates are typically very busy and very crowded. Fast-driving residents mixed with tourist drivers reading maps while driving on unfamiliar highways is a recipe for an accident. If you are planning on driving in the area, be sure to study your maps and plan your routes beforehand, as you will need to be very attentive to keep up with the pace of the busy highways. Be sure to allow plenty of extra time for traffic delays and avoid becoming a victim of road rage. Do not be surprised if you come across a low-speed car chase, as they are not all that uncommon.
